Метаданные Изображений (EXIF): Что Это И Как WebP Их Удаляет

Understand image metadata and how to remove it when sharing photos.

Convert to WebP

Introduction

Your photo can contain more than pixels. When you take a picture with a phone or camera, the device often embeds extra information in the file: where you were, when you took it, what camera you used, and sometimes more.

This hidden data — called metadata — can be useful for organizing photos but becomes a privacy concern when sharing images. You might not want to reveal your home address just because you posted a photo taken there.

This guide explains what image metadata is, what privacy risks it creates, and how converting to WebP can strip metadata from the output file.

What Image Metadata Is

Digital images can contain several types of embedded metadata:

EXIF (Exchangeable Image File Format) — The most common type. Includes camera settings (shutter speed, aperture, ISO), date/time, GPS coordinates, device make/model, and orientation data.

XMP (Extensible Metadata Platform) — Adobe's format for storing editing history, keywords, ratings, and other descriptive data.

IPTC (International Press Telecommunications Council) — Used primarily by photographers and publishers for copyright, captions, and credits.

Most smartphone photos include EXIF data by default. Many users do not realize their location is being recorded with every shot.

Why Metadata Can Be a Problem

Metadata creates several privacy and security concerns:

Location Exposure

GPS coordinates in photos can reveal:

  • Your home address (from photos taken at home)
  • Your workplace location
  • Frequently visited places
  • Travel patterns

Personal Data Leakage

Even without GPS, metadata can reveal:

  • Timestamps that show your schedule
  • Device serial numbers
  • Software and editing tools used

Operational Security

For journalists, activists, or anyone concerned about privacy:

  • Photos can be traced back to specific devices
  • Location data can compromise sources or safe houses
  • Timestamps can establish movements

Does WebP Remove Metadata?

Whether metadata is preserved depends on how the WebP file is created. Different tools handle this differently.

How img2webp.com handles metadata:

The converter works by rendering your source image onto an HTML Canvas element, then exporting from that canvas as WebP using canvas.toBlob("image/webp", quality).

This Canvas-based export does not preserve EXIF metadata from the original file. The canvas renders only the visible pixels — location data, camera information, and other metadata are not carried over to the output.

The "Strip metadata" setting in the converter reflects this behavior — it is a reminder that the output will not contain the original file's metadata.

Step-by-Step: Strip Metadata by Converting to WebP

  1. Upload your image: Drop a JPG or PNG onto img2webp.com, paste from clipboard, or import from a URL.
  2. Choose settings: Select lossy or lossless mode based on your quality needs.
  3. Export WebP: Download the converted file.
  4. Verify: The output WebP is a new file without the original container metadata.

Important: The original file on your device still contains its metadata. Only the exported WebP copy is stripped. If you want the original cleaned, use a dedicated metadata removal tool.

Privacy Notes: Be Precise

While the WebP conversion itself runs in your browser, not all operations on img2webp.com are purely client-side:

  • Local file upload: Files selected from your device may be sent to the server via /api/upload for progress handling. The endpoint does not persist files, but the file data is transmitted.
  • URL imports: Images imported via URL are fetched through server-side routes at /api/import/*.
  • Cloud imports: Google Drive and OneDrive imports also use server routes.

If you have strict privacy requirements, use the device file picker with full awareness of how the upload endpoint works. For complete privacy details, see the about page.

Summary

Image metadata is easy to overlook but can reveal sensitive information — especially GPS coordinates. Converting to WebP via Canvas-based tools like img2webp.com strips this metadata from the output file.

Key takeaways:

  • EXIF metadata can include location, timestamps, and device info
  • Canvas-based WebP export does not preserve original metadata
  • The original file retains its metadata — only the exported copy is clean
  • Be aware of import methods that involve server requests
